Whether it’s cross-country or across town, it’s difficult to settle into a new place after a move. You’ll want to make your new house feel like home, do some online research, get acquainted with the neighborhood, and make new friends. Seek advice from your real estate agent, and here are some resources to supplement!
Start at home.
It’s easiest to start in the place you’ll be spending the most time. There are opportunities to make things feel more comfortable all around.
- Give your new house that cozy touch with décor and furnishings.
- Introduce yourself to your new neighbors. They could be excellent resources!
- Perform some basic outdoor projects to liven up the yard and impress the locals.
Utilize online resources.
Shy? Anxious? Do some online research before diving into all the new possibilities before you.
- Join local online communities to scope out what locals are saying about your neighborhood and beyond.
- Research local tourist attractions, especially if you moved from another state. Pick your favorites and plan a trip!
- Find nearby health and wellness services. Schedule an online doctor visit for you and each member of your family.
Get to know your new surroundings.
Nothing makes you feel more out-of-place than not having your bearings in your new area.
- Go on regular family walks around the neighborhood.
- Take a guided city tour to better acquaint yourself with the area, especially if you’re from out-of-state.
- Research and discover hidden gems around the city.
Meet new people.
Once you’ve gotten acquainted with your new surroundings, it’s time to expand your social circle to include neighbors and locals.
- Since you’ve met your neighbors, gather them around for a housewarming party.
- Join your coworkers for happy hour or other (appropriate) outings.
- Make friends with other parents at your child’s school.
Don’t be intimidated by your move! It may take time, but once you’ve cozied up the house, done some research, familiarized yourself with your new surroundings, and made new friends, it will make a world of difference. Soon, you’ll feel right at home.
