GUEST POST: By Adam Taylor
With record numbers of people working from home these days, home offices have become quite the craze. Many people are permanently working from home, meaning that they need dedicated spaces to work. That being said, it isn’t always easy to outfit a small living space with a home office. In fact, it can be quite difficult. If you feel like your home is too small for an office, you’re not alone. Thankfully, an office space can be achieved, even in the smallest of living spaces.
Determining How Much Space You Need for a Home Office
Not all work is created equal, and some work requires more space than others. As such, it’s important to determine how much space you need for an office. Ask yourself the following questions as you prepare to set up an office at home:
- Do I need a full-size desk? If you’re only working from a laptop, you may be able to get away with using a smaller desk and office chair in your home.
- How much storage do I need? If your work requires lots of reference materials or printouts, you may need more storage space than other people.
- Am I going to host meetings or clients in my home? If the answer to this question is yes, you’re going to need a dedicated room for your office or a well-put-together, dual-purpose living room.
After you’ve answered these questions, you’re ready to start planning your perfect home office!
Planning Your Home Office
When you’re planning your home office, there are a few things to take into consideration. Set up the perfect home office by following the steps below.
Step 1: Pick a Location
With the answers to the questions above, it’s time to pick the perfect spot for your office. If you don’t need to host people, you can really add your office area to just about any room, as long as the furniture fits! Just make sure that it’s set up in a way that you’ll be free from distractions. You may need to turn your desk in a specific direction to accomplish this.
Step 2: Choose Your Furniture
After picking a location, you’re ready to find some furniture to fill the space. Make sure your furniture fits, and that it offers everything you need. Many desks come with storage options, making storage solutions easy! Additionally, consider getting ergonomic furniture, like standing desks and high-quality office chairs. They’ll make a big difference, though they may be more expensive.
Step 3: Decorate
After you’ve got your workspace set up, you’re ready to decorate it! Remember to keep decorations appropriate, and relevant to your work if they’re thematic. Chances are you’ll be doing video meetings, so decor plays a big part. Some great options are motivational posters, pieces of art, and natural pieces. A great natural piece is ammolite stone. Ammolite is iridescent, meaning that it changes colors depending on the way that the light hits it. This adds distinct energy to any home office and can make the space more pleasant to work in. Congratulations! You’ve successfully put together a home office! Now you’re ready to get to work. You’ll feel so much better being able to separate your work life and home life, we guarantee it.
